Home Learning
We would like to share some positive ways in which you could help your child with literacy and numeracy development.
Set aside a regular time each night to read to your child. The bedtime story is a most valuable way to ensure a healthy attitude towards reading. Make this time enjoyable and free from tension.
Most nights your child will bring home some reading in their book bag to share together. On Fridays they will bring their poetry books home. Listen to your child read and help him or her to point to the words. Encourage your child to gain sense from the story. Resist jumping in and correcting mistakes but ask questions like- “Does this make sense?” “What can you tell me about?”
The pictures are important information about the story- please don’t cover them up. Your child needs those vital clues. Encourage your child to point to the words, one by one with his/her index finger as they read.  Praise your child’s efforts!
Encourage your child to retell a story in their own words. Words are everywhere, when you go out and about read signs and labels together.
We will be giving each child a set of high frequency word cards- play fun games with these e.g. Let’s see if we can find a word the same as this one, Memory, word snap, Can you find… Can you write any of these words?
They will also be given a set of number cards 1-20. Children can practise ordering them, first 1-10 and when they can do this then 1-20. They will be learning about numbers that come before and after a given number on the number line 1-20.
Rooms 1&2 visit our school library on Fridays and Room 3s library visit is on Tuesdays. The children will bring a school library book home; they will need to bring their book back to school by the following library day. We will visit the Tawa Library once a term; you will need to return these to the Tawa Library.
Meet the Teacher- Rooms 1& 2 Parents meet your Teachers before the picnic Tea, at 4.30 in Room 2 then gather on the field and bring your dinner/ Fish and Chips -5pm Thursday 4th
We aim to provide a happy, secure, caring environment with each child actively involved in the learning process.
Gods Blessings                       Marie Andrewartha, Faencha Nicholls, Naomi Johnson.
